“The block is hot,” I said to Murk as we sat on the front stoop of Jhonny’s mama’s spot eating some good ass cookies that she had baked for us.

Ms. Berneice was the closest thing we had to a mama in the streets. She always kept us fed when she saw us. I loved her old ass even though I wasn’t sure she knew it. I didn’t hang around much and whenever I did see her, I never had much to say. But I always made sure she was good, she just didn’t know it. One of the envelopes of money that I sent out each month was addressed to her, she just had no idea who it came from because I’d never left a return address.

Murk nodded his head and popped a cookie in his mouth before following it up with some milk. Suddenly, a young chick, looked like she had just turned eighteen the day before, walked by us wearing a pair of dusty looking coochie cutters and a dingy white tank top that showed off her belly complete with a big ass outie belly button. She turned and gave us what was probably supposed to be her sexy look before licking her lips and switching her ass extra hard as she sauntered away.

“Naw, my nigga, the block is stank and hot,” Murk corrected as he turned his nose up at the chick. “I can’t believe I used to give these nasty ass gutter bitches a chance back in the day.”

Laughing at him, I shook my head.

“Don’t be turning your nose up at that bitch,” I joked. “Actin’ like you too good. Hell naw.”

“Nigga, I am too good,” he corrected me. “Always been. I just didn’t know my worth.”

We both burst out laughing at that one. His ass was dumb as hell.

“Yo, you heard from Quan recently? I been callin’ his ass but he always actin’ like he up to something or some shit. It makes me feel like he still got Quentin hiding out over there.”

I scratched at my jaw as I thought about the last conversation I’d had with my brother. Something was off with Quan but it was obvious that he was hiding something. What he was hiding, I didn’t know but I was certain it had something to do with that twin of his.

“Naw, I ain’t heard from that nigga. Ask Dame,” Murk told me.

Turning to my right, I looked over at Dame who was a few paces away talking to a chick. I had to do a double take because the last time I’d looked over there he was standing alone, but now he had some googly-eyed model looking bitch all up in his face.

“Aye, he done gave up on Trell?” I asked Murk as I looked on and shook my head from side-to-side.

“Hell, look like it. But can you blame him? Shit, she been gone for months. I can’t blame that nigga for wanting to get his dick wet,” Murk replied as he started rolling up a blunt.
